Discovering San Antonio Attractions, One Attraction at a Time
If you’re planning a trip to the Lone Star State, let me tell you about a city bursting with history, culture, and unforgettable experiences: San Antonio. As a seasoned traveler, and local of Texas, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring San Antonio’s finest attractions, and today, I’m excited to share my discoveries with you.
Embracing History and Iconic Landmarks
The Alamo
Free to visit the grounds and church. Guided tours range from $20-$40.
Ah, the legendary Alamo! This historic battleground is one of the most visited landmarks in San Antonio. It’s the land where the Battle of the Alamo took place when the Mexican state of Tejas won independence and became the self-governing republic of Texas. It’s more than just a physical building, but a symbol of Texas pride and resilience.

Tower of the Americas
General Adult Admission – $18.50
For a bird’s-eye view of San Antonio, you can’t beat the Tower of the Americas. I rode the elevator to the top and was greeted by breathtaking 360-degree views of the city below. The observation deck offers a full landscape view you can’t get anywhere else in the city.
If you want to sit and enjoy a drink while taking in the views, Bar 601 at the top has spectacular cocktails.
You can also make a reservation at Chart House and have dinner at the top of the tower while rotating around for 360-degree views of the city! <-Quite a unique experience!
San Fernando Cathedral
Free to visit and watch the light show every Tuesday through Sunday.
The San Fernando Cathedral is a major tourist attraction due to its rich history, being one of the oldest cathedrals in the U.S., and a site linked to the Battle of the Alamo. Founded in 1731, the cathedral features striking Gothic Revival architecture and is renowned for its “San Antonio | The Saga” light show. The light show is a 24-minute video of an art installation projected on the exterior of the cathedral for all to watch.
For showtimes and images of the show itself, visit the Main Plaza website.
Nurturing Nature and Tranquil Gardens
San Antonio Botanical Gardens
If you’re a nature lover like me, you won’t want to miss the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. This delightful oasis is home to a stunning array of plant life, from vibrant flowers to exotic succulents. I spent hours meandering along winding paths, soaking in the beauty of themed gardens like the Texas Native Trail and the enchanting Lucile Halsell Conservatory. Not only is this garden stunning, but it’s incredibly well-planned for entertaining children too. Almost everything is hands-on and a great space for children to run free with their imaginations.
Japanese Tea Garden
For a taste of serenity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, head to the Japanese Tea Garden. You can’t help but feel an incredible peace while strolling past koi ponds and blooming cherry blossoms. It doesn’t take long to walk through this entire park, but it’s free and absolutely worth the stop.
Be sure to stop by the tea house for a refreshing cup of matcha, and ice cream, or grab a bite to eat too!
Riverfront Revelry and Urban Exploration
GoRio Riverwalk Tour
No visit to San Antonio is complete without a leisurely cruise along the famous River Walk. I hopped aboard a GoRio boat tour and was treated to a front-row seat to the city’s vibrant waterfront scene. From historic landmarks to an array of restaurants with mariachi bands playing on the patios, there’s no shortage of sights to see along the way. It’s the perfect way to soak up the city’s unique atmosphere!
The Pearl
For a historic brewery turned hip and happening, make your way to The Pearl. This dynamic neighborhood is brimming with trendy restaurants, boutique shops, and lively entertainment venues. You can even catch a movie on the lawn, like I did, depending on when you visit.
