October Book of the Month – ‘Verity’ by Colleen Hoover
My review WITH spoilers:
Okay. This book is the most fucked up book I’ve read in a while and I absolutely loved it. I love a book that I want to stay up all night to keep reading. A book that makes me audibly gasp from time to time. Any book that is unpredictable and keeps me on my toes.
I was so into the twists and turns. I had to pause and ask myself a few times “what would I do in that situation?” when I was trying to decide what I wanted Lowen to do with the information she had found and the incidents she kept encountering.
Probably the only predictable piece of this story was Lowen and Jeremy falling for each other. Both were the only adults around, they’re living in the same house, and both emotionally damaged/dealing with hardship. It’s completely natural to be attracted to whoever is around and can relate to your struggle.
Add in Lowen basically reading sex novels about Jeremy with full details about his skill, size, and abilities in the bedroom, it’s a no-brainer.
However, I honestly never once predicted the ending. Although, now that I read the ending, and I am looking back at the whole story, I maybe could have concluded the ending with Verity… but I’m still on the edge whether or not Lowen and Jermey make it. I don’t even think I want them to make it because that’s about to be one toxic relationship based on a foundation of lies and murder!
Some lingering questions I have:
- If Jeremy is a chronic, then what happens next?
- Can Lowen live with the guilt of what they did to Verity?
- Does Lowen become a chronic because of karma and being with Jeremy?
- Is Crew destined for a shitty life because of who his parents are and the childhood he’s endured?
- Do I really think Verity was a VERY SMART villain or do I think what she said in her letter is true?
I had a lot of questions after the book concluded, but none that I was unhappy about having. You know sometimes when you read a book and you get mad because the writer just really didn’t answer some big questions for you… it didn’t feel anything like that.
I felt I had enough information, loose ends were tied up enough for me to be happy with the ending. I like that it was kind of open-ended. You can assume or predict anything you want until there’s another, or even indefinitely. Sometimes I’m okay with not knowing all the details just for the sake of staying in suspense.
Also, non-important sidebar – I love the character names in the story. Verity is different, it’s beautiful and it comes with it’s own suspense and chilling mysteriousness. Lowen is also a beautiful name but definitely feels commonplace. It’s not a name that screams royalty or affluence. It’s a name that deeply connects with Lowen’s character being an awkward, 30 year old, struggling writer looking for her place in the world.
This quick, edge-of-your-seat read was definitely worth they hype.
