March Book of the Month – Beach Read, by Emily Henry
I only read one book this month, and I entirely blame it on me not liking the book but not being able to give up on it (as it was my book club’s book of the month). As I’ve mentioned before, this is a real struggle I have. Even if I don’t like a book, I hold on to any small thread of hope that it’ll get better and I continue to truck through it at any cost.
I know.. I need to do better.
ANYWAY….
I don’t have much to say about this book. For some, I’m sure it was a quick, flirty, cute weekend read, but for me, I found it to be redundant, predictable and boring. (Just like the other books I’ve read by Emily Henry.)
Now that may seem harsh, but mind you, I’m not a romance reader in the first place. I don’t typically like romance stories and I never really connect with any of the characters so I’m a tough sell from the start.
Beach Read is about an author who has been in a bit of rut who just so happens to be occupying a beach house for a few months due to her father’s passing. Her neighbor, an attractive writer himself is quite the opposite of her in all aspects. They butt heads at first, and then of course end of falling for each other through a series of connections, shared writers block, and a couple internal bets on who is a better writer.
To find out what happens between the two of them (a summer fling? a forever relationship? a bet gone wrong and they become enemies?) you’ll have to read the book.
or don’t, you’re not missing much.
Besides the romance part of the book January (main character in the book) is dealing with some emotional challenges going through her father’s things after his passing. I know this storyline was supposed to add charm and emotional connection to the story, but it just didn’t hit home for me personally. It didn’t pull at my heartstrings.
If I didn’t scare you off, you can read more about the book (and some reviews from people who actually loved it) on goodreads.
