The History of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
The story behind Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in Michigan begins with Pierce Stocking, a local lumberman who spent much of his life in the forests and dunes near Empire, Michigan. In the 1960s, Stocking envisioned a scenic road that would allow visitors to access high dune views safely and overlooks of Lake Michigan without damaging the fragile landscape.
Using his own land and experience in road construction, he opened the original Sleeping Bear Dunes Park in 1967. His private scenic drive quickly became popular for its carefully planned viewpoints, picnic areas, and educational stops. Pierce Stocking continued to operate the scenic drive until he passed away in 1976. The next year, the road became part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and was eventually named after Pierce Stocking.
Today, the route remains one of the most iconic scenic drives in Michigan, blending natural beauty with thoughtful preservation.

Access: Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is open seasonally for vehicles to drive through, typically late May to late October. During vehicle closures, the area is still open to hikers and visitors on foot.
Cost: $25 per vehicle for a Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Entrance Pass. The pass covers all areas within the national lakeshore, including the Dune Climb, beaches, hiking trails, and overlooks.

The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive Michigan loop is approximately 7.4 miles long and is designed to be driven slowly with multiple stops. Speed limits are intentionally slow throughout, allowing you to enjoy the views and safely stop at each scenic turnout.
Along the route, you’ll find 12 designated scenic stops, each offering a different perspective of the surrounding landscape. Expect a mix of:

The road is paved and suitable for standard vehicles, making it an accessible way to experience the national lakeshore without hiking steep dunes. The loop is one-way traffic only, and large trailers and RVs are not permitted. Covered Bridge

Glen Lake Overlook
This overlook provides stunning views of Glen Lake’s turquoise waters and surrounding hills. It’s a popular spot for photos and picnics.
Picnic Mountain
An elevated area offering panoramic views and picnic tables, perfect for a relaxed break during the drive.
Dune Overlook
Arguably the most dramatic stop, this overlook features boardwalks leading to sweeping views of sand dunes, Lake Michigan, and, on clear days, the Manitou Islands.
Forest and Ecosystem Stops
Several stops focus on the changing forest landscape, highlighting through informational plaques how vegetation adapts to wind, sand, and seasonal changes within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Lake Michigan Overlook
This is probably the most popular stop along the drive. Rising hundreds of feet above the shoreline, this overlook delivers one of the most breathtaking views along the drive and is especially popular near sunset.
North Bar Lake Overlook
North Bar Lake Overlook highlights a calm inland lake separated from Lake Michigan by a narrow strip of sand. The overlook offers peaceful views of the shallow lake, dunes, and surrounding forest, with nearby access to the water that’s especially popular in warmer months. Additional Scenic and Interpretive Stops
The remaining stops explore dune ecology, glacial history, and smaller inland lakes, rounding out the experience before looping back toward the entrance. Not all of them offer incredible, breathtaking views, but if you’re interested in learning more about the area, these stops are very informative and help cultivate the whole story Pierce Stocking was trying to tell.

- Visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak summer crowds.
- Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen, as services along the drive are limited. This is a great place to stop and have lunch. There are picnic tables all throughout the park.
- Sunset is a popular time to visit, so plan accordingly if photography is a priority.
- Stay on designated boardwalks and paths to protect the dunes and the surrounding environment.
Is Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive Worth It?
If you’re driving the M-22 Highway, this is a must-stop for your trip. It doesn’t take much of your time, maybe an hour or two, and will give you some of the best views you’ll see along the way.
